Mokosz is primarily considered an East Slavic goddess, who over time, may have been relegated to a more demonological role. Written sources attest to the existence of her cult in Russia. Today, Mokosz is most commonly associated with the broad cult of the earth. Folklore reveals that Mokosz was also linked to weaving and spinning. Among Russians, this goddess survived as a household demon – a woman with a large head who spun wool and sheared sheep at night, making her presence known by the sound of a working spinning wheel.
